Carrie Ann Baade: Angels and Carnivorous Flowers

Drawings/Works on Paper, Painting, Prints
A love of pattern is evident throughout Janet Towbin’s drawings, paintings and prints. Towbin creates complex images from simple lines and shapes that have been repeated in an orderly, obsessive manner. Among the selection of work in this exhibition are mirrored patterns inspired by an eclectic mix of subjects such as tribal tattoos, historical textiles, curled ribbons, psychedelic art of the Sixties and the intricate patterns formed by a decorative interlocking tessellated shape.

National Geographic Live's Standing at the Water's Edge

Talks/Lectures, Green/Environmental, Photography
During her time with the Kayapo´ people in the Amazon, the photojournalist Cristina Mittermeier documented a society that relied on their local waterway to survive — and found their way of life threatened by a massive new dam. In British Columbia, she found First Nations protecting their sacred headwaters, and in Hawaii, a new community of indigenous peoples seeking to reclaim their connection to the sea. She learned that one concept bound these three disparate communities together: “Enoughness,” or taking only that which you need.
